USDA Genesee Valley Region REDI Program
What is the REDI Program?
The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development office is the sponsor for Rural Economic Development Initiative (REDI) programs offering opportunities for eligible partners to expand capacity for small and rural towns to harness regional assets, create economic development plans, and implement those plans. The Town of Wheatland area, s is part of a network of Genesee Valley Region communities that have received a REDI program award for the development of an actionable economic development plan. The Greater Wheatland Area Chamber of Commerce was a formal supporter of the associated REDI application and now the subsequent awarded program.
Network of Communities
The REDI application was based on the foundation of the Letchworth Gateway Villages initiative, expanding the “network of communities” across the Rural Genesee Valley Region, communities across five counties: Monroe County (Town of Wheatland, Village of Scottsville), Genesee County (LeRoy, Pavilion), and multiple communities each from Livingston, Wyoming and Alleghany Counties.
The main objective of the approach presented in the application was to create new, place-based market opportunities linked to the outdoor recreation and sustainable tourism industries. The prevailing concept is to leverage the region’s natural assets to improve residents quality of life and to promote sustainable economic growth using outdoor recreation and tourism as a catalyst. This initiative established a platform for growing regional collaboration, identifying new resources and creating a strategic roadmap for reach economic potential.
